Main Course Salads

Don’t miss this three-part series of live, online classes where we’ll make satisfying, main course salads loaded with delicious ingredients with easy homemade dressings for each. Chicken Taco Salad with Spicy Chipotle Ranch, Field Greens, apple, candied walnut salad with blue cheese and honey balsamic dressing, Chinese chicken salad with crunchy wonton strips and soy-toasted sesame vinaigrette.

JoAnne Wood was born in England, grew up in San Francisco, and comes from a long line of fine British bakers. After graduation from the California Culinary Academy, she worked as a pastry chef in the San Francisco Bay area. Since moving to Maine in 2000, she has worked as a professional pastry chef, owned a dessert catering company and, for more than 15 years, taught cooking classes. She has a passion for cooking and baking, and for teaching people of all ages.
Beekeeping for Intermediates

This class is designed to look in more detail at key aspects of beekeeping, particularly helpful to those who wish to run several hives and get the most out of them. The course is a good follow-on from the beginner’s course. Building up hive strength, swarm prevention, splitting hives, making nucs, disease prevention, feral colony relocation and honey production are all covered. This is a live online class.

Peter Cowin, a/k/a the Bee Whisperer, started keeping bees in the 1970s at the age of 11, and now tends to more than 130 colonies. He is past President of Penobscot County Beekeepers Association and mentor to many local beekeepers. Peter runs a beekeeping supply store in Hampden, Maine. He sells packaged bees and produces queens and makes hundreds of nucleus colonies for sale each year. His bees produce thousands of pounds of honey per year sold under the Bee Whisperer name. Peter has been teaching beekeeping at his honey farm and for Adult Ed for more than eight years.
American Red Cross Adult First Aid & CPR/AED Online Certification
While MDI Adult Ed is unable to offer in person First Aid & CPR courses during the pandemic, we are committed to sharing courses offered by our partners and other organizations. If you need any help connecting or preparing for this workshop, we are happy to support you!
This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of emergencies. If you're taking this course to meet OSHA requirements, please check with your workplace to determine if this online-only course is acceptable. The course features award-winning simulation learning, an interactive experience where you will respond to real-world emergencies in a virtual setting to help prepare you to recognize and respond to first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults.
This course requires a PC or tablet with a high speed internet connection, does not work with Internet Explorer, and is not supported on smartphones. Allow approximately 2 hours 10 minutes to complete the course.
Certification: Red Cross courses offer Digital Certification - an online version of a Red Cross certificate, which provides anytime, anywhere access to student training history and course certificates. Digital certificates can be viewed, printed or shared online and can be accessed anytime through your Red Cross Account. Each certificate includes a unique ID and a QR code which meets employment requirements and allows employers to easily confirm your certificate is valid. There is no need to carry your printed certificate around anymore!
Continuing Education: Nurses, social workers, teachers and daycare providers and other professionals who need continuing education units to maintain licensure or certification can obtain CEUs through American Red Cross Training Services.

Dog Training online: Interest List
Does your dog need training but, with COVID, you can’t go to in-person classes? “Dogs gone Digital” may be the answer! This drop- in class via ZOOM is perfect for ALL ages, experience levels, needs and more. It is an online obedience course with a revolving curriculum to help you work on sit, down, stay, wait, loose leash walking, manners, go to your mat, coming when called and so much more. Each weekly session will cover 2 – 3 obedience skills, a life skill (drop it, nail trimming, no jumping, etc.) and offers a Q&A session too! Even for dogs who are good at these skills already, we can add challenges and feedback to help perfect some skills.
The sessions are also recorded so if you want to watch it again later you can.

Gardening: Grow Your Own Organic Garden INTEREST LIST

Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for an evening-long workshop on how to grow your own garden organically. Topics covered: soil science, enriching soil, fundamentals of composting, crop rotation, use of green manures, plant vs week identification, weed control, dealing with pests, etc. The instructor is an experienced farmer or gardener in our area. Free seeds will be provided! All are welcome, from first-timers to experienced gardeners who want to experiment with new techniques.
Internet Safety: Interest List

Staying safe on-line is important on so many levels, whether it’s keeping your information and financials private, or making sure your children are safe on-line. Join us for some tips for safety on the web. Basic computer skills including hardware and software basics, are required for this workshop. This is a live online class.

Painting Birds in Chinese Brush
