Our Classes

Dog Training: Canine Good Citizen

Calendar Jan 23, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 6 weeks

The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. This program stresses responsible dog ownership for owners and training and good manners for dogs.  All dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test may receive a certificate and their first official title from the AKC. The class will prepare you to take the (optional) test at the end. Manners 1 & 2 required for entrance to class (or by instructor approval.)

These classes will be held at Somesville Fire Dept (1157 Main St., Mt. Desert). To accommodate the demand, Manners 1 will be offered multiple times/dates so please pay attention which section you register for.

 

All classes will be taught by Whitney Thurston, CPDT-KA of Salty Dog Obedience and Adventure. Each class runs 6 weeks for 50 minutes. Her goal and passion is to help other dog lovers learn how to effectively communicate with their dogs, to help them build lasting relationships.

 

 

Dog Training: Manners I Section D

Tired of feeling like you’re at the other end of a dog sled team? Want to be able to take your dog to the farmers market without them jumping all over everyone? Need to figure out how to get your dog to come when you really need him to? Manners 1 is the class for you! For dogs 4 months and older, this class will help you and your dog work as a team to conquer the big struggles of having an adolescent dog. We'll use positive reinforcement to practice coming when called, polite greetings (not jumping), leash walking, sit/down/stand, stay, mat training and attention training. This class is for non-reactive dogs only. First class is people only, no dogs please.

Full Course

Art: Watercolor for Intermediates

Calendar Jan 27, 2020 at 6:30 pm, runs for 4 weeks

This is a class for those watercolor artists that are beyond the beginner stage and want a little more challenge. We will experiment with different techniques, learn color theory and learn to tighten our control. We’ll explore how light effects color and how the color wheel becomes crucial to a successful painting. This class is only 4 weeks long as we focus on one or two large paintings. There is a $10.00 material fee (included in the cost of the class) for the higher-grade art supplies that we will use. Beginner artists are encouraged to take the watercolor for beginner’s class. No class on Feb. 17th.

Dance: A Taste of Ballroom

Learn the Basics – just enough to get you on the dance floor. We’ll a little of everything: Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Swing, Cha Cha, Rhumba, Salsa, Charleston……all steps are very learnable!

Dance shoes and a partner are strongly suggested.

No dance experience required. No class on Feb. 18 or March 3.

Pottery for Beginners

Have you ever wanted to 'throw a pot' - that is, use a potter's wheel? This extremely popular beginner's class will cover hand building techniques, forming on the potter’s wheel, surface decoration and treatments. Make functional handcrafted products to use and enjoy or give as holiday gifts! Material costs ($50) are included in the fee.

NOTE: No Class Feb. 18.

NOTE: The March 3 class will be held on Wednesday March 4th. Any snow dates will be made up the next day, Wednesday.

Dance: Merengue

Merengue is a style of Dominican music and dance. Google “merengue” online to find a video. Great energetic and fun dance style!

Dance shoes and partner strongly suggested.

No dance experience required.  No class Feb. 18 or March 3.

Dance: Modern Line Dance

Calendar Jan 29, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 8 weeks

Line dancing involves people standing in lines learning dance movements together. “Modern Line Dance” is now being used in many line dance clubs, including Pop, Latin, Irish, Big Band, Broadway, and a little Country and Disco. Dance shoes strongly suggested. Dance experience and partner are not necessary. Dance shoes or shoes with suede bottoms are strongly suggested.

Understanding How to Heat Your Home

Randy’s back!!! Last year’s hugely successful plumbing class continues now with how to best heat your home. In this class you will learn the fundamentals of home heating. We will explore the 3 Major components of a central heating system and Space Heater Options as well as look at Fuel Sources, Distribution System, types of Heat Emitters. We will also look at Heating Domestic Hot Water.

Please bring a calculator.

Randy attended 2 Year Technical College and has worked in the industry 40 Years. He has made connections with some of the top Manufacturers and Individuals Nationally and Internationally. He has travelled to Europe on several occasions as a guest of Heating Equipment Manufacturers.
