Want to start or return to college as an adult? This FREE workshop introduces adult learners to educational opportunities in general and MEOC services in particular. This interactive workshop touches on the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career options, and study skills. The admissions section reviews college options, the college search process, and the application structure. We cover in detail the fundamentals of financial aid, including the filing process and the applications. We also discuss effective transitions into college, college readiness, and study skills. This workshop is offered by Maine Educational Opportunity Center.

Grow Your Own Organic Garden! W19

Join this highly popular class offered by MOFGA: Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for an evening-long workshop on how to grow your own garden organically. Topics covered: soil science, enriching soil, fundamentals of composting, crop rotation, use of green manures, plant vs week identification, weed control, dealing with pests, etc. The instructor is an experienced farmer or gardener in our area. Free seeds will be provided! All are welcome, from first-timers to experienced gardeners who want to experiment with new techniques. We will even send you home with free seeds!

All attendees will receive a copy of the presentation as well as resource guide.

HiSET ® Tutoring, Prep, and Classes

The HiSET® has replaced the GED in the state of Maine. A student who successfully passes the HiSET® will be awarded a High School Equivalency Diploma. Intake, pre-assessments, tutoring, practice tests, and exam are free of charge to Maine Residents. Accommodations can be made for those with documented disabilities. This class prepares students for one or more of the HiSET exams. Upon completion of any one subject level, students will be referred to the Chief Examiner to sit for the exam. Student should plan to spend 3-6 hrs/week in class.

Maine Driving Dynamics for 65+ year olds W19

Maine Driving Dynamics is a Maine sponsored, 5-hour defensive driving course that offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. Course includes discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine highways. The class is taught by a certified Maine Driving Dynamics instructor in a format that engages students with lectures, videos, and class discussion/participation. Those completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record. Students 55 and older may receive an insurance discount from their insurer.

Students under 65 years of age should register under the other listing with the fee of $40.This class has TWO sessions within ONE week.

Telling Our Stories Book Group

How do we tell our own stories? Why are they important? How do we decide what to tell? What do we learn from telling our own stories? From reading others’ stories? How and why do we share our stories with others? How do our personal stories connect to the stories of our communities and country? Join this book discussion group to discuss these questions and discover the world of books and ideas. Learn how to relate the themes in books to your own life and to share your ideas with others. This four-session monthly book group is a great way to build your confidence in reading, discussing ideas and preparing for school, college, work or social situations. You’ll receive nine books as part of this special program provided through the generous support of the Maine Humanities Council.If you or someone you know would be interested in this group, please contact us!
