Photography: Still Life

All you need are a few everyday objects, check around the house- a bowl of fruit, a vase of flowers, a photograph. During our Introduction to Still Life Photography workshop, Steve will show you how to set up your subject and control the Lighting. From the initial idea, how to select your props, through to taking the photo and lighting your subjects, plus advice on post-production and ideas on getting your photo-printed and framed!

This is a live online class using ZOOM.

Steve McGrath is a professional freelance photographer and photography teacher who has been creating images for 20 years. Steve first began by shooting sports photography for local high schools, then weddings, and stock agencies. His love of the outdoors led him to focusing more on his true passion. Steve was an active member of the Gateway Camera Club for many years, and has won many ribbons and awards at fairs and competitions through the club and on his own. Many of his images have been published in school text books.

This is a live, online class via Zoom. 

In this 6 week course, you will learn the importance of movement, stress reduction, self-care (including sleep strategies, rest, self-love, self-forgiveness) healthy nutrition and mindfulness and healthy relationships to improve your overall wellbeing.

This course will be done on Zoom in a lecture format with time at the end for Q & A.  with journal prompts, hand-outs, text, phone call or email check-ins. There will be a FREE Zoom meeting to go over the course at the end of the 6 week session.

Fee includes a journal, pen, hand-outs, weekly check-in via phone call/text/email and FREE Zoom meeting at the end of the 6-week session to wrap up the course.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction with Hatha Yoga Session 1

This 60-minute Yoga class will provide sequences that calms the nervous

system along with stretching/warming the muscles and preparing the mind to rest.

Breathing techniques, short meditation and positive affirmations will end the practice.

In the 1920s Maine saw a dramatic rise in Ku Klux Klan membership. At the height of this short-lived movement 23% of the population of Maine were members of the Klan. Bench will explore what prompted Klan activity, why Mainers were so susceptible to the Klan's messaging, and what brought about its abrupt end.  

Donations to the MDI Historical Society are encouraged on the night of class.

Mastering Portait Drawing

BRING: Pencil 2B/4B, kneaded eraser, pen and ink, 9 x 12 ( minimum) drawing pad.

France Hilbert is a French American painter, sculptor, and art educator. She studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Paris, France, The Academy of Art of The Newington Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, NY, The Art Students League of New York, and earned her MFA at Ecole Européenne Supérieure d'Art de Bretagne. France was the recipient of the Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant, an artist in residence in Copenhagen, and worked as an artist in Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Florence. Before moving to Maine she lived in NYC for 20 years. Of her public and private commissions some are permanent installations, including “Talma”, a 7 ft bronze sculpture in the public square of the Theatre of the Valley of L’Yerres, in Brunoy, France, and “The Calling”, a pair of bronze relief sculptures at the Georgetown University Medical School building in Washington, DC. During the past three decades France has taught private art classes, designed curricula, and taught art programs for community centers, public schools, Adult Education, and COA in drawing, painting, sculpture, and scenic design.

All About: How to Take a Bird Walk

This presentation will be a live, online zoom class and will provide an entry point for beginners who wish to add bird observation to the walks they take.

Our session will include habitat clues, seasonal changes and events, using audible ID cues, user-friendly apps and online resources, and optics.

Craig Kesselheim is a life-long birder and long-time resident of MDI. Craig has taught Observing Birds I and II for MDI Adult Ed in previous years. He loves sharing his passion for birds.
